How we write and check our pages

Every guide on Tech File Formats follows the same path from question to published page.

1. Start from a real question

We look at what people actually search for, such as how to open a CDR file or why a ZIP asks for a password, and plan one page for each distinct question so pages do not repeat each other.

2. Draft with help, decide as people

We use AI writing tools to help produce first drafts from our own brief, which lists the facts, safety rules and style we expect. A draft is never published as it is. Our editors check each step, menu name and claim, remove anything doubtful, and rewrite for clarity.

3. Check facts against the source

File format details are checked against the format’s published specification or the maker’s own documentation. Steps are checked against current versions of Windows, macOS, Android and iPhone. For tax and identity documents we follow the patterns published on the official websites and tell readers to confirm there.

4. Keep pages current

Phones and programs change their menus often. When a reader reports a change, or we notice one, we update the page and the date at the top shows when it was last checked.

Read our editorial policy for the standards every page has to meet.
