About Tech File Formats

Tech File Formats began with a simple observation from years at a college computer lab and a busy print and design counter: most file problems are not hard, but nobody explains them in plain words. A student cannot open the notes a teacher shared. A printer receives a drawing from a newer program. A taxpayer downloads a PDF that asks for a password nobody mentioned.

What you will find here

  • One page for each file format people ask about: what it is, where it comes from, and how to open it on Android, iPhone, Windows and Mac.
  • Step by step conversion guides that say what really happens to your file and when an online converter is a bad idea.
  • Clear patterns for the passwords on common Indian e-documents, with a helper that runs only in your browser.
  • A file type checker that reads the first bytes of a file on your own device and tells you what it really is.

Who we write for

We write for readers who are busy, often on a phone, and want the answer first. We assume no technical background, and we test steps on the devices most of our readers use.

Independence

Tech File Formats is an independent site. We are not part of, and are not paid by, any software company, phone maker or government department mentioned on our pages. Product names appear only when they are part of the question a reader asked.
